AP 560 - Student Services Transportation Request

Background

Student Services will make requests for student’s transportation on school buses or other means of transportation as required for the student's unique needs through the following procedure.  Identified students are eligible for transportation services that would be denied under the procedures followed for the application of regular transportation.

Procedures

1.  The school should complete and submit the Student Services Transportation request form found in Clevr.

2.  The Superintendent of Student Services will then determine the best method of transportation to suit the needs of the specific student. Needs to be considered may include the following:  EA to accompany student, behavioral support required (or not), and any other specifics required by the student. Options may be discussed with Transportation Services to assist in making the final decision. Transportation Services will determine the proper seating required unless specified by the Superintendent of Student Services.

3.  Once all necessary research is done the Superintendent of Student Services then authorizes the “Student Services Transportation Requests” form, and forwards to Transportation Services.

4.  Transportation Services will review the completed form to see where the student’s residence is located in relation to the nearest bus routes, and/or the school you are requesting bus service to.  If another method of transportation is required, that will be researched rather than the use of the bus.  Transportation Services is not involved in determining the needs of the student, just in making the final arrangements to accommodate the student, as deemed necessary by Student Services.

5.  All pertinent information will be shared with the Superintendent of Student Services and they will notify all the parties that are affected by this arrangement.

6.  Transportation Services will communicate with the bus contractor or the bus driver (when transportation by bus is required).

7.  If the child is requiring buckling/unbuckling, it will be handled as follows:

  • If an EA is assigned to ride the bus/drive the car
    • AM pickup – parent escorts child to bus/car and EA buckles child in
    • AM drop off – EA unbuckles the child and escorts to the school
    • PM pickup – EA escorts child to the bus/car and buckles child in
    • PM drop off – EA unbuckles and parent meets the bus/car and escorts to the house
  • If no EA is assigned to ride the bus/drive the car:
    • AM pickup – parent escorts child to bus/car and buckles child in
    • AM drop off – EA meets the bus/car and unbuckles the child and escorts to the school
    • PM pickup – EA escorts child to the bus/car and buckles child in
    • PM drop off – parent meets the bus/car and unbuckles the child and escorts to the house

8.  Once a Student Services Transportation Plan is in place, changes can be made in the following manner:

  • School staff will consult with the Superintendent of Student Services
  • New requirements will be e-mailed to Transportation Services by the Superintendent of Student Services
  • Transportation Services will review the request and make adjustments as necessary

9.  Changes may include:

  • Adding a car seat or eliminating the use of a car seat
  • Installing a different car seat (as per child's weight restrictions)
  • No further requirement of an EA riding with student
  • Change of pick-up/drop-off location
  • Wheelchair needs
  • No further transportation requirements
