Agricultural Education
Horizon School Division recognizes the foundational role that agriculture plays, not only in our economy but in shaping the character of our communities. We are committed to cultivating an understanding and appreciation of agriculture in the next generation.
In 2023, Horizon's annual Student Day adopted an agriculture focus, leading to the decision to permanently dedicate this event to agricultural themes. Starting in 2024, we will welcome high school students from Grades 10 and 11 for a day of ag-focused learning. We extend our sincere gratitude to the many supporters who made our inaugural Ag Student Day a success; please see the links to the right for more information and photos.
We also highlight agriculture in Horizon through various initiatives, including:
- Celebrating special dates like Agriculture Month in Saskatchewan (October), Canadian Ag Day, and Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM)
- Partnering with the Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association and Star Egg to offer CALM contests that promote ag education
- Organizing student visits to the U of S College of Agriculture and Bioresources and the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence
- Hosting student demonstrations from AgExperts on their accounting and farm management software
- Coordinating student visits from Farm & Food Care and Ag in the Classroom
- Collaborating with Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+), which joined our staff for a Collaborative Learning Day and is now working with high school classes towards certification.
Stay tuned as we plan for Student Agriculture Day on June 10, 2024, and explore other ways to introduce the world of agriculture to our students.
